Wardrobe Essentials for the Working Girl

Hello All! Welcome back to my blog! Today I want to switch things up and talk about fashion and essentials that I think every career/working girl needs to have in their closet. Starting your professional life is already an overwhelming feeling, with thinking about what your new job will entail and how to navigate your new workplace with rules, relationships, and everything in between the thing that you want to worry about the least is what you will wear. 

As silly as it may sound, whenever I have started a new job or have gone to a job interview I slightly stress out when it’s time to think about what I’ll wear. I’ve always looked to blogs for inspiration and guidance on what is appropriate and what is not. Now, this will definitely vary by profession. Some professions will require you to wear a full-on suit and look as professional as can be but, as time passes, more and more workplaces are opting for the business casual look. 

Now, let me just put my two cents here and say that even if your workplace allows casual wear, in my opinion you should take that with a grain of salt and still try to look a bit more on the professional side than strictly casual (i.e. flip flops, hats, super ripped jeans etc.). 

Anyways, today I want to share my list of things that I think everyone should have in their closet when they are at the starting point in their careers. Take this as your basic checklist that will get you going.

Lauren Conrad Purse
I’ll start with this very essential item. Having a go-to everyday purse is very important. I have come to realize that as much as I love small purses for everyday wear in my personal life, I need something that is medium size to full size for work. This one here is from Lauren Conrad and I purchased it at Kohls and I absolutely love it! It’s the perfect size and fits everything I need to carry for my everyday work life.
Lauren Conrad Blazer
A blazer is so versatile you can literally dress it up or dress it down and always comes in handy. You will notice a trend here but, one of my favorite brands is the Lauren Conrad brand at Kohls. It’s super affordable and has a lot of things for us working girls.
Express Jeans
Whether your office allows it on an everyday basis or you only wear them on Fridays, jeans are a wardrobe essential for both in and out of the workplace. I always suggest a neutral color with no rips for the workplace. Some of my favorites that I own are from Express. 

Note: In all honesty jeans are the hardest thing for me to shop for so, if possible I always prefer to shop in-store so that I can try them on.
Target Dress Pants
Again, depending on your workplace, you will either have lots of these or only a few. In my case, I only have a few but I consider these super essential. They come in handy, whether it be for an interview, a meeting, or just a day (for me it’s Mondays LOL) where you want to look slightly more professional. It’s always good to have a pair that make you feel comfortable and professional at the same time. My favorite ones that I currently own are from Target. 
Cute top
I always like having a few “cute” tops that I can rotate with either my jeans or business pants. They always come in handy when I’m thinking about what to wear each morning. I usually shop at places like, Target, Express, Kohls, Macys and sometimes even American Eagle for these kinds of tops. Again, I like having these so that I can rotate them with the different pants that I own. The one shown in this picture is from the Lauren Conrad collection at Kohls.
Cardigan
Cardigans are my absolute favorite because honestly it can get cold in the office. I always opt to pair them with dresses or over a top that I can wear without the cardigan in case I need to take it off. I like having at least 2 or 3 so that I can also rotate them and use them multiple ways. I own the one pictured here from H&M and I love it!

Ok these for me are a staple because I pair them with different tops that can be see through. They are super in-expensive and I usually get mine’s at H&M.
Target Dress
Dresses are my absolute favorite for the summer time! They’re an easy outfit to put together and are super comfortable. I like having a few in my closet that I can rotate in and out.

Flats are basic, easy, and usually a comfy staple every girl needs in their wardrobe to either pair with jeans, work pants and even dresses. Things I keep in mind when shopping for flats: I like when they are made from suade on the inside (because the other material makes my foot sweat), and I also look for comfort the first time I try them on because, have you ever tried breaking in flats? Yeah it hurts LOL. One of my favorite places to shop for flats is Nordstrom Rack!
Nordstrom Rack Booties
These are also an option that you can pair with jeans or even dresses. My tip for these would be to wait until the fall season is upon us (when all the stores start selling them) and look for ones that are cute and that will be functional for you. I personally own these and love them. They still have a few left on SALE at Nordstrom Rack HERE.
Target Black Pump
 I always say these are a staple because, you never know when you’ll need to dress a bit more professional and these are always handy. I got mine’s from Target, they’re affordable and get the job done.
Target Open Toed Shoes
These are a cute option to have in your closet because they will allow you to switch things up. Again, I also bought these from Target. I like having something that is easy to walk in LOL.

So, there you have it. I wish I would have had a list like this when I was starting my professional life. Again, when you are starting your professional life, the thing you should worry about the least is what you will wear so, being prepared is key. Also, keep in mind that thinking about what you’ll wear doesn’t have to be a daunting task. Make it fun and find pieces that will make you feel the best version of yourself. Trust me, when I’m dressed in nice clothes and I feel comfortable, I feel like I can conquer the world!
