Emily in Paris- My Review of the Show
If you have a Netflix account then you probably heard about a new show called “Emily in Paris”. The show was created/produced by Darren Star who is very well known for creating other shows such as “Younger” and “Sex and the City”. This show follows Emily, who is a young marketing career girl who is sent to Paris on behalf of her company (based in Chicago back in the US) to represent them at their agency in Paris. As you can probably already imagine she encounters lots of different situations such as work problems, life problems and just dealing with a whole new culture that includes a language barrier as well as new surroundings.
I was obviously (like many) very excited to watch this show (especially because I am a very big fan of Darren’s other works like “Younger”) but found that as I was watching, I had so many feelings in regards to the show. So, today I’m writing this blog post telling everything I think about this show and my overall opinion!
***SPOILER ALERT**** IF YOU HAVEN’T WATCHED THIS SHOW YET, STOP READING HERE ?
Alright, let’s start with her boss. Her boss is really mean… My first point in regards to what I think about this show is that I absolutely don’t like how the show has a character that is ALWAYS mean to Emily! The person I am referring to is Sylvie. In the show she plays Emily’s boss at the agency in Paris and I kid you not, she is mean to her throughout the whole season! I get that she is her boss and it is likely that we’ll encounter a boss with some of her personality traits at some point in our career ? but in terms of career life (which we all know I love) I don’t like that her character is portrayed that way. We, as women, should have images portrayed on television that are nicer. Believe me, not all bosses are like hers. I can attest to that plus watching how she gets treated makes me sad.
Next, let’s talk about her social media. My second point here has to do with Emily’s social media following. In the show she starts off with a very little following and just by posting random pictures on her social media her following randomly grows and she becomes an “influencer” over night. Like what? I know that can definitely happen but it’s unrealistic that out the blue she gains so many followers.
Everything always goes right for Emily… In literally every episode in the show she is presented with a problem (most times related to work) and by the end of the episode everything always goes her way. I just don’t think this is an accurate depiction of life, especially professional life. No person right all the time…
She makes friends really quickly… This one is another critique that I heard about the show and I completely agree! Again, while this can happen it seems that Emily just lands in Paris and goes to sit at a park for lunch and randomly makes a really close friend. It makes a good storyline but I don’t know if making friends that quickly in a foreign country where there is a language barrier would be that easy…
Those were just a few thoughts that I had after I finished watching the first season (yes, I watched the whole season ?).
Overall, I think it is a good show. It’s fun to watch and definitely gets way better towards the end. If you’ve watched it, I’d love to read what you thought of it.
